Anger
Insideout
Hey all;

Anger is my most difficult emotion to manage. I’ve been one to stuff the emotion and let it build up until I erupt over something small and insignificant. It’s a strong hold that the devil has over me. It’s extremely difficult for me to imagine what a healthy expression of this emotion would look like. I’d so appreciate any advice you’d have to offer. Thanks!
"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Rev 21:4)

Institutes of the Christian Religion. John Calvin 1536

“we say that it is not the natural body of our Lord Jesus nor his natural blood which is given to us in his Holy Supper. We affirm that it is a spiritual
communication, by which in virtue and in power he makes us participant of all that we are able to receive of grace in his body and blood; or again, to declare better the dignity of this mystery, it is a spiritual communication by which he makes us truly participant of his body and his blood, but wholly spiritually, that is by the bond of his Spirit.”

Col 3:8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your

>>>>Anger in itself is fine, it's when we let it go too far<<<<<<<

Im not sure I quite agree with that. I too used to have all the above, & rarely, still do. I think you need to work on rooting out the cause of your anger. Start looking at what it is that is making you angry, & ask God to show you what the root cause is. In my experience anger is by far & away due to our own pride, or fears. I very rarely get angry for myself anymore, I rarely have the right. Righteous anger is OK, but 99% of our anger is not righteous, & therefore sinful. Once you see the reason behind your anger, you can learn to adjust your attitude & you should find yourself getting angry less & less.
When you look at folk who "easily fly off the handle", they are usually either fearful of something (usually lack of control) or full of pride - their time is more precious, their way is the right way etc etc.
If you find yourself getting angry - take it to God, & ask Him to illuminate what is really going on, you may be surprised. None of us feel that we are prideful, or fearful - but those to underlying emotions control human beings immensely!

>>>>>>>>>>>James 1:19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
James 1:20 for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Righteous anger is righteous - But humans rarely have that type of anger. There are many more scriptures about dealing with anger in us.

>>>>>>>>If one looks at anger as sin or wrong, then one can make the argument that Christ was wrong or that He committed sin, in which we know better. Pride is sin, so anger cannot be because of pride in all cases.<<<<<<<<<

Righteous anger is when you are angry on behalf of God - which is what Jesus was. We all too often think we are being angry for righteous reasons, but when you examine your true motives that is very rarely the case.

yes, there is that one verse that clearly indicates there is a time for us to get angry, but there are many more indicating that it is a dangerous emotion for us to have. Just a few verses after the one Bob quoted it says:

Eph 4:31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

It seems somewhat contradictory to at first allow us to be angry, but admonish us to to not sin, & then verses later tells us to get rid of ALL anger.

>>>>>>>Pride is sin, so anger cannot be because of pride in all cases.<<<<<<

I didnt say it was - but certainly it is most of the time in my experience. Too many times I have seen pastors & leaders give vent to anger that they claim is righteous & based on scripture, when in fact it is because people arent submitting to THEIR interpretation of something, or their way of doing things. True righteous anger is OK - but few of us ever achieve that very often as we are such poor judges.
Anger is by and large an extremely destructive emotion that causes great harm, conflict, & murder. We are told not to let our anger lead us into sin, but there are many more verses showing the destructive nature of where anger leads us. Let us not forget the 1st time anger is displayed by humans in the Bible it leads to the 1st murder.

Right now, I can’t point you to any scripture, but I believe it was Moses that had a problem with anger. I too, hold back anger to the point that I explode at the seemingly littlest things. So, we are in good company with Moses and a good study beginning point might be in reading how God dealt with Moses’ anger. I believe we can find the account of Moses’ life starting in the book of Exodus. Just trying to draw from memory, I believe there is episode were God told Moses to speak to the rock, but Moses in his anger struck the rock and God told something like that he would not allow Moses to cross over into the promise land. I am sure that there are some great spiritual lesions to learned in this account of Biblical history.

Thanks Jacob;

I never consider reading through Moses life from that point of view. Johna was another one that God dealt with over his anger. To paraphrase the classic question God presents to Johna, "does your anger do you any good?"
